My first two civic's were std's they were really good cars.My civic now is a dx and there was a major diffrence in speed, i guess i was just so used to the std civic's.

I just bought a Civic (90 red hatch) but I don't know if it's an Si (doubt it), DX, or whatever. I asked the previous owner before I bought it and he said he had no clue... it's a 4 speed and has no power steering or anything so I'm assuming it's the base model, but how can I be sure?

based on what u said, if its a manual then its definately your base model, if its an automatic 4 speed its a DX because the Si 4 speed automatic has power steering and in your case, you dont. So its either base model or DX.

manual = base model
automatic = DX

i plan on getting a new engine alltogether, but fer know im just playin with it. i went to a local salvage yard and bought an exact intake & air filter box and cut the bottom of the airfilter box off (w/ a hacksaw then sanded the edges smooth) so it would be completely open yet still hold the filter
in place. it made my car sound a little more "throaty" and improved acceleration a pinch i did this mainly to save money and keep my gas mileage up as much as possible..cause yes, it does get awesome gas mileage

yup, another fellow STD hatch owner here. You better watch out that whopping 78 hp will sneak up on you sometimes. I'm hoping to put in a zc before I go to college though. Maybe that'll remedy the situation
